Obstacle courses create mental stimulation and exercise for your dog.

They are a great way for you and your dog to bond as the course challenges you both through endurance and communication.

An obstacle course is comprised of several pieces of exercise equipment used together to create a course that challenges both dog and owner.dog-jumping-through-hula-hoop

Obstacle courses are a great way to not only exercise and to prevent boredom for your dog, but to also build trust with your dog.

Through an obstacle course a dog may learn how to run over and under obstacles and jump through loops. Their speed, agility and time can be tested throughout the course.

You can either purchase a full course or make your own one. If you’re handy or on a budget, you can build these obstacle courses at home with items easy to find, such as tires, planks, poles and empty drums.

The workout that a course can provide will be good for your dog’s health, behaviour, and longevity.

3 Basic Obstacle Types consists of:

  • Jumps (standard pole and tire)
  • Tunnels
  • Weave poles

Entice your dogs natural instincts:

Dogs are natural hunters, chasers and runners. In the wild they would be chasing after prey while navigating though a variety of barriers and obstacles to hunt for food. An agility course is designed to mimic these types of natural scenarios and fulfill the hunting and chasing desires of your dog. With the expectation of a satisfying meal or snack after each agility course, this will encourage the dog to complete the obstacle course.

The courses provide good exercise:

Practising an agility course is a great way to get rid of excess energy. Agility courses are great for the mind but also the body.  Running through a course that involves passing over and through a variety of obstacles will force your dog to jump, leap and crawl through the course. This helps your dog get fit and strengthen muscles, improve coordination and increase endurance.

The obstacles will help strengthen the bond between you and dog:

As your dog must rely on verbal and hand instructions from you, the owner, the trust between owner and dog will be solidified. Obstacle courses are a great way to practice communication with your dog. Training in this way will help reinforce the basic obedience commands and ultimately improve your dog’s behaviour in everyday life.
